Teena has never been interested in playing by the rules, and I AM TOO FAMOUS makes that crystal clear from the very first minute. Created by Liverpool drag performer and actor Lucien Jack’s flamboyant alter ego, this 11-track, self-produced record arrives as a companion piece to the Edinburgh Fringe show Who’s The Daddy, but it easily stands on its own as a fearless blend of comedy, camp, multilingual pop, and heartfelt confession. Recorded entirely in Liverpool, the album swings wildly between outrageous satire and sincere vulnerability, proving there’s much more beneath Teena’s larger-than-life persona than punchlines alone.
Things kick off with “The Teena Intro,” an over-the-top mock celebrity introduction that immediately establishes the record’s tongue-in-cheek personality before flowing into “Sadnewyear.” The emotional opener contrasts beautifully with the theatrical beginning, pairing cinematic orchestral swells, shimmering piano, and pounding percussion with soulful vocals reflecting on leaving behind painful memories and embracing a fresh start. From there, the title track “I Am Too Famous” flips the mood entirely, delivering infectious pop hooks wrapped in delicious self-parody as Teena pokes fun at celebrity culture with infectious confidence and larger-than-life charisma.
Then the album keeps listeners guessing. “I’m Not Afraid” transforms an earlier career highlight into a polished modern anthem about confidence and rejection, while “Your Son Is Gay” injects cheeky humour through an energetic Oasis parody that never loses its irresistible bounce. “Life Without You” slows the pace with heartfelt emotion before “I’m Bored” embraces absurdity, turning everyday monotony into playful entertainment. Meanwhile, “Soc la Teena (I Am Teena)” stands out through its effortless blend of English, Spanish, and Catalan, celebrating multilingual identity with witty lyricism and infectious charm, whereas the delicate rendition of “Boig per tu” showcases Teena’s softer side through graceful guitar work and gentle, flowing melodies.
Closing tracks “Santa! Empty That Sack!” and “You’re Leaving Me” perfectly summarize the album’s balancing act. The former is gloriously ridiculous—a festive romp overflowing with innuendo and theatrical flair—while the latter strips everything back for an unexpectedly tender finale that lingers long after the last note fades. Across I AM TOO FAMOUS, Teena never allows camp to overshadow craftsmanship or humour to diminish honesty. Beneath all the sparkle lies an artist confidently embracing every facet of identity without ever taking themselves too seriously.
