Idiopath by Kenton Hall & The Necessary Measures: Album Review
‘Idiopath’ is a fantastic companion to the double album ‘Idiopath and Omniopath’ that demonstrates the unique approach of Kenton Hall & The Necessary Measures to classic pop/rock and alternative rock music.
With each subsequent listen to ‘Idiopath’, any listener would discover more and more to like about the album’s beautifully crafted songs. ‘Maybe’ was written and directed by Mbili Munthali. The amazing one-shot film for the song shows the ups and downs of a female-female relationship. Kenton’s emotional vocals over controlled electric guitar and light percussion give the prog-rock hymn a dreamlike vibe. The album kicks off with the lively ‘Careful How You Go’, which has a slick guitar riff and Kenton’s warm, inviting vocals. Cadence and tone are spot on, creating a powerful listening experience. This following song, ‘Dumb As A Brick’, showcases the band’s musical abilities and range to their fullest effect. Even though it sounds different from the last song, it still has the same great story aspects that made the previous one so great. The new lines and music create a nice counterpoint to the album’s more reflective tempo and vibe. ‘Going Too Far’, a groovy track about advancing too far in an unlikely romance, has an altogether different musical style. The song’s excellent guitar playing is a perfect fit with the rest of the music and elevates it to a new level.
Each track feeling as fresh as the last, Kenton Hall and The Necessary Measures are definitely worth keeping an eye on, as they elevate themselves artistically. If you’re a fan of experimental music or are simply seeking a change of pace, this is an album you really must check out.
