Sometimes a remake ends up sounding like little more than a polished retread, but “Kickback” by The Fods featuring Night Wolf takes the opposite route entirely. Interestingly, the collaboration also marks the first official link-up between The Fods and Night Wolf after the pair met through a radio station connection.
Rebuilt almost from scratch by producer Night Wolf, the track keeps only the original vocal sections intact while transforming everything else into something dreamier, richer, and far more cinematic. It comes off as a laid-back, trip hop-inspired reimagining, tailor-made for late-night drives, hazy Sunday afternoons, and introspective movie montages.
The song opens on a striking note with heavy, slow-burning strings that immediately create a sense of emotional weight. Then, out of the distance, a hallowing wailing voice drifts in like an echo before the percussion finally lands. Once the beats begin rolling and hitting with momentum, the track gradually blooms into motion rather than exploding all at once. It’s subtle but immersive. Soon, the vocalist arrives soaring above the production with a smooth high voice that glides effortlessly through the layered instrumentals.
What makes “Kickback” especially engaging is the contrast woven into its sound. There’s melancholy lingering beneath the surface, yet the song never fully sinks into darkness. Marimba textures and sweeping strings add warmth and color, giving the track an indie-pop edge while still staying rooted in chilled electronic territory. Meanwhile, the hopeful lyricism keeps everything feeling uplifting and emotionally open. You can practically picture someone speeding down an empty highway at dusk with the windows down and not a single worry left in the rearview mirror.
“Kickback” shows a different side of Night Wolf’s artistry, stepping away from darker sonic palettes in favor of something softer and easier to sink into without losing depth. It’s atmospheric easy listening with emotional bite, that could easily find a home in film scenes, adverts, or reflective coming-of-age moments.
