Fran Lusty’s “Ladybird” is a five-track EP that encapsulates the storytelling style influenced by Damien Rice and Virginia Woolf. With a voice that is thick, luscious, and deeply relaxing, Lusty delves into a variety of topics in this soulful collection.
The EP opens with the titular track, “Ladybird,” a song written as a poignant reminder to nourish one’s body to nourish the mind. It’s a touching tribute to her grandmother. The instrumental accompaniment is simple and is centered around soothing acoustic guitar strumming.
“Don’t Pollinate” follows, a contemplative piece inspired by an argument. Lusty’s echoing and thoughtful vocals contribute to the emotive weight of this track. Her voice, with its soft richness, croons through the verses.
“Brother” continues her heartfelt lyricism, dedicating this song to her younger sibling. It has garnered recognition, finding its place on Spotify and Apple Music playlists. “Seasalt,” the fourth track, draws inspiration from a David Attenborough episode, where newly hatched sea turtles are misled by artificial light. The song kicks off with the sounds of waves gently caressing sandy shores, and Fran’s voice adopts a whimsy, catchy, and rhythmic pattern.
The EP’s focal point, “You Make It Easy,” is about revisiting a childhood forest and realizing the profound changes it and we have undergone. This track introduces a dreamy, watery ambiance. It is replenished by Fran’s lower-toned, captivating vocals, which narrate with a sense of storytelling prowess.
“Ladybird” is a beautiful representation of Fran Lusty’s musical journey, transitioning from bedroom-recorded acoustic tracks to a harmonious blend of sounds.
