Emerging indie duo Blackwater Lightship make a striking entrance with their debut EP Last Night I Saw The Leaves Fall, a five-track collection brimming with profundity and cinematism. Crafted by Leon and Tom, the project reflects a painstaking creative process, countless hours spent fine-tuning guitars, percussion, and harmonies to match the sound they envisioned. What’s impressive is how personal and vulnerable the record feels, yet it never loses its sense of direction. It’s an honest snapshot of two artists finding their footing while daring to explore the full range of their sonic identity.
The EP kicks off with “City Lights,” pulsing with driving drums and shimmering guitars. The singer’s thick, tender voice carries an introspective weight, especially when he delivers the refrain, “I am still waiting for the sun to rise.” Each repetition lands harder, as if the sun he’s waiting for is more metaphorical than literal, symbolizing the hope that remains just out of reach. The melancholy and resilience in the delivery is perfectly balanced against the rhythm’s steady momentum.
Then comes “Over & Out,” a standout moment of quiet intensity. It opens with subtle, jittery percussion and warm melodies that immediately pull the listener in. The vocals stay soft and breathy, teetering on the edge of restraint before the drums arrive with a confident thump, pushing the song toward something more anthemic. When he sings, “Think you had it all / And now I am back on top again,” the self-redemption comes subtly as a part of something bigger.
Closing with “The Places Where We Go,” the EP slows to a reflective burn. The strumming guitars rise and build as the vocals grow somber and grave. He sings, “You will never see it through/The places where we go, we will never know.”
Last Night I Saw The Leaves Fall comes and goes like autumn in slow motion. Listen to it on Spotify.
