There’s something quietly luminous about Elke Louie’s debut Lavender, a five-track EP that feels like flipping through a soft, sun-faded diary of youth. Written across her teenage years in small-town Queensland, the record captures fleeting emotions of first love, confusion, stillness, and change, with an intimacy that never tries too hard. Instead, it just… exists, gently and honestly. Blending indie folk textures with a dreamy, almost nostalgic haze, Louie makes a deeply personal and instantly familiar space.
The title track “Lavender” is the emotional centerpiece, and it shows. Built on delicate acoustic strums and raw, unpolished chords, the song unfolds like a confession. Louie’s soft, tender, and unhurried voice floats through the melody as if it’s being discovered in real time. There’s a warmth to it, an innocent devotion, especially in the imagery of cosmic skin, garden air, and love filling up all space.
Then comes “Sandman,” which shifts the mood into something more introspective. The acoustic layers feel lighter, almost trickling, but the emotional weight runs deeper. Louie’s delivery turns somber, her voice carrying that hazy in-between state of sleep and waking life. The lyrics wrestle with memory, disconnection, and a strange comfort in not being fully present. It’s vulnerable in a different way, more about losing your grip on clarity.
By the time “Killing Time” rolls in, the tone turns haunting. The acoustic shimmer pairs with soft piano lines, creating a slow, reflective atmosphere. Louie sounds more worn here, almost drifting as she questions purpose and time slipping by. With an ache in her repetition, she stays resilient as she’s sitting with the feeling instead of running from it.

Stunning EP review of Elke’s debut Lavender, except that the top image is of another artist who opened for ELKE LOUIE at The Cave Inn.
That’s HATI seated on the stage playing guitar not ELKE LOUIE. ❤️
