Valvo’s latest album, Lost Futures, is a deeply personal exploration of the immigrant experience, wrapped in a shimmering cloak of shoegaze sound. With the vibes of Slowdive, the album uses layers of delay and reverb to create a dreamy, atmospheric soundscape that perfectly complements the themes of nostalgia and longing.
The mastermind behind Valvo, Luis Mora, wears many hats and presents a singular vision for his artistry. He plays all the instruments save the drums, and records, produces, and mixes the entire album himself. Recorded at the legendary Funkhaus studios in Berlin, “Lost Futures” takes you on a protagonist’s journey through a life uprooted.
“She Was The Gold Rush” opens Lost Futures with a rush of exhilaration tinged with bittersweet longing. Deep, hoarse vocals croon over a bed of sparkling instrumentals, creating a sense of urgency chasing after something just out of reach.
“Better Than You” brings a mood shift with a sense of gritty determination. Grinding guitars and an atmospheric haze create a feeling of mystery and introspection. “For a Better Yesterday” rewrites the past melancholically with the protagonist’s desperate longing for a life that might have been mixed with the acceptance of having experienced the rollercoaster.
“Lost Futures” the title track, lives up to its name. The song intensifies with a seething, mysterious atmosphere. The guitars shimmer with a dark beauty as the drums pound a steady rhythm, creating a sense of unease, reflecting the protagonist’s struggle to come to terms with their past.
“Lost Futures” is a meditation on the power of traumas. By confronting the ghosts of emigration, the protagonist paves the way for a future filled with possibility.
