BADSQUATCH has never been interested in coloring inside the lines, and “Move” proves it with a grin on its face and sweat already dripping off its brow. The Omaha artist, who also fronts the dystopian party-rock outfit The Party After, takes a sharp left turn from the darkness of his earlier material and cannonballs straight into a neon-lit, pulse-racing workout anthem.
Written during a deeply transformative period of heartbreak, healing, and self-reinvention, the track carries genuine emotional weight beneath all its swaggering fun. It is part of a fourteen-track project exploring mental health, shadow work, and growth, yet “Move” decides to tackle recovery not through sadness, but through motion. Sometimes you have to dance your demons out, after all.
Recorded at Topetitud Estudios in Mexico City, a studio BADSQUATCH considers a second home, the song embraces its gloriously cheesy ‘80s exercise-video spirit with both arms wide open. Right from the jump, punchy, steady beats slam into warm, shimmering synths while sequenced electronic layers bounce around with infectious energy. Then BADSQUATCH enters with that deep, velvety voice of his, gliding through the verses with effortless charisma like a late-night radio host convincing you to reclaim your life one dance step at a time.
The lyrics are blunt, relatable, and impossible not to chant back. “Life’s a mess, you’re trying your best,” he sings before pushing toward the hook like a motivational trainer with heartbreak scars still fresh. And when the chorus explodes into “Get up and move / Find your groove,” the track becomes ridiculously catchy in the best possible way. The melo-buddy backing vocals and pumping synths practically beg for flashing gym lights and terrible retro aerobics outfits.
Still, beneath all the fun lies something sincere. BADSQUATCH channels personal transformation into a reminder that movement itself can be healing. “Move,” at its core, it is about survival, release, and clawing your way back to yourself one beat at a time.
