Brighton’s queer-punk trio Daffodildos delivers a gritty, raw, and unapologetic punch with their highly anticipated EP Not My Cup of Tea. Released on October 4, this EP showcases Emily Flea (vocals/guitar), Captain Jax (bass), and Dannie Von Flange (drums) signature high-energy sound and their bold, socially conscious lyrics.
Not My Cup of Tea kicks off with a blaze of buzzing riffs and pounding drums in “Stuck in ‘77.” Emily Flea’s vocals are high-pitched, vibrant, and demanding, with carefree assertiveness. The standout line, “We are the future, not you,” instantly commands attention.
“Mirror Mirror” amps up the intensity with revving, gnarling guitar riffs and bustling drums, driven by Flea’s commanding voice. A song that delves into personal struggles, “Never Enough” offers a raw and honest look at addiction. Over buzzing guitars, Flea yells with frustration about the cycle of excess. The shrill guitar solo exudes an emotional release that has a relieving factor.
With “No Pride,” Daffodildos protests how Pride has become a commodity. The song opens with immense punk grit and shimmering guitar riffs. The delivery has more of a storytelling tone and it makes you want to listen. She sings, “We are here, we are here/We are never gonna disappear,” making it clear that the fight for LGBTQ+ visibility and rights is far from over.
Opening with light, comedic backing vocals—“Ba ba ba da”—this track takes a more sardonical and catchy turn while dealing with heartbreak. The EP closes on a humorous yet thought-provoking note with “What’s Your Excuse?” The track opens with a tongue-in-cheek dialogue about a woman justifying her protein needs over a disinterest in vegetables. This humor transitions into a song about animal rights, underpinned by catchy rhythms and fuzzy guitars.
