Following the success of last fall’s “Gaslight,” emerging talent Eli Derby has kept the momentum going with an acoustic cover of Tyler, The Creator’s “Earfquake” and another catchy tune dubbed “Love Song.” He adds to that today (Mar. 9) with “Lately,” a collaboration with fellow LVRN artist 6LACK about their previous lovers straying off to another love interest:
“Who’s on the other end of the call, love?” I heard you made a new best friend and have been spending a lot of time with her lately; I’m not the only one you invest in, so why are you leaving so soon? Running only makes things worse, oh, you’ve been a step ahead recently, it feels like you’ve got your lines down pat, we were on the same page, who instructed you to change things? I used to think we were a gang-gang, that we used to slip through with the thing-thing, fucking up your bayang, and turning you to my main…”
Derby performs for the camera in a warehouse loft in a lyric video that goes along with the song. While 6LACK does not appear in the video, it is hoped that an official visual with his inclusion will be released shortly.
Derby, a real multi-talent in every sense of the term, began playing the drums at the age of two and went on to sing in the choir and play the piano by the time he was a teenager. After putting in effort in and around his DMV stomping areas, he eventually teamed up with LVRN in 2020, a well-established organization that allows him to be himself, as he explained in an interview with UPROXX:
“I was 15/16 years old when I met them, and I saw five accomplished Black men, and it seemed good.” It felt like a safe haven for me to be myself. The enthusiasm was palpable, as was their musical selection and general demeanor… They’re well-aware of what they’re doing.”
You can listen to Eli Derby and 6LACK’s “Lately” with that.
