Pistola by Jonathan Crayne: Review
Jonathan Crayne comes in with blazing guns on the third track of his EP, OKNOW with the aptly named track, Pistola.
The EP takes a slight turn in sound on the third track. The song starts with a prog-ish overdriven guitar riff that is played with palm-muting as the verse starts and gets layered by overdrive again as the song builds up. Jonathan sings in a slightly different time signature over the guitar riff and all the instruments meet at the starting beat again on the chorus. This little structural complexity accentuates the boastful eccentricity of the song. The changes in the guitar tone and Jonathan’s vocal style over different parts of the song just add to this structural beauty, especially when the guitars harmonize.
Quotable lyrics:
“He’s a pitbull
He’s a beast with a gun
Con la pistola
With a gun
Nate Zuellig kept the tempo like a living metronome while hitting the drums harder than the meteors that wiped out the dinosaurs off of the face of the earth. His technically meticulous drumming can be heard throughout the rest of the EP, especially on the next track Don’t Play Joker. The chemistry between these two musicians is simply mind-blowing.
