Purgatory is an album that grabs you from the first listen because of its compelling combination of bass, percussion, guitar, and synth, and Michy Treeβs excellent vocals. A variety of the singer-past songwriterβs works are collected on this Halloween-released EP, which has an emo, rock, and alternative-rock vibe.
This Halloween-themed undertaking has a spooky introduction, like in the beginning βVIP.β It opens with a mellow ukulele melody that belies a lighthearted start, gloomy lyrics, and some spooky sound effects before building to a more serious rock tune. The opening guitar riff of βNuclear Cityβ is so intense that it immediately makes you want to get up and rock out. The cityβs trees lament the dark skies that haunt this progressive metropolis. The beginning of βRed Craneβ is noticeably slower and more solemn than the beginnings of the two preceding tracks. This typically plodding song picks up with a powerful belt at the end of the chorus and harder guitar for an epic outro. Those who have wronged her in the past appear to be the targets of βMedusa,β βBite,β and βDead to Me.β But Michy Tree demonstrates how to move forward despite the negativity of others. βPurgatory is a collection of songs to bring out your inner emo and embrace the season of Halloween,β Tree says. The EP βPurgatoryβ, mostly recorded in her room while Dan Weller served as producer, shows that Michy Tree is not one to hold back.
