Realize by Yaokay: EP Review

Realize by Yaokay is a four-track EP that showcases the diverse musical abilities of Robby Rozite (Yaokay), Malcolm Sullivan (Varsity Mac), and Sam Knauss (Eskayy). The EP features a blend of Trap, Indie-Rock, Hip-Hop, RnB, and Pop music genres, and draws inspiration from artists such as Nick Hakim, Orion Sun, Beach House, and Nayana Iz.
The songs on the EP cover a range of themes, from social anxiety and finding support in friends to falling in love and self-reflection. Each track on the EP has a unique sound and message, with standout songs such as โbiggest fanโ and โGURLโ highlighting the theme of finding solace in supportive relationships. The EP ends on a mellow note with โWATERโ, which serves to depressurize the project.ย The standout track, โThe Kingโ, is a personal and unique song that showcases Yaokayโs gifted music production. Realize EP was recorded in the bandโs cramped apartment in Madison, Wisconsin, with Yaokay doing the majority of the production, including playing various instruments, composing and arranging the songs, and mixing and mastering. Malcolm provided guitar and songwriting assistance, while Sam and Malcolm offered valuable feedback throughout the creation of the EP.
The project is a personal reflection of the bandโs experiences growing up, enjoying life, and struggling with social anxiety. Realize showcases the unique musical talent of Yaokay, Varsity Mac, and Eskayy and is a testament to their ability to create an engaging and thoughtful project.
