Amsterdam by BIAS: Review
Film and electronica meet in BIAS’ song “Amsterdam.” This powerful EDM melody is reimagined from Jon Brion’s “Phone Call”, a cinematic score created for the emotionally gripping “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.” While the performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet moved my very soul, BIAS’s track “Amsterdam” had a similar enchantment. Uplifting synthesizers and a thrilling singer draw cadence to the track, while an epic beat keeps it all intact.
Italian artist BIAS has a knack for energetic beats and heartfelt singing. In “Amsterdam”, a faded rhythm plays out, almost shoe-gaze-like, and plummets into a powerful crescendo. BIAS’ voice grabs the song by its essence and all of it feels like a delicate expression of the self. It blends excellently within a neat EDM passage, that clocks out in less than 2 minutes. In such a short time, the musician manages to excite the listener and allows a moment of ascension too.
The EDM genre is renowned for making audiences dance the night away, but it also has thought-provoking elements tied with it. In my opinion, when the beat drops and heavy synths flow through in “Amsterdam”, an individual’s pain may be liberated rather than suffocating from it. It’s the magic of an upbeat tempo after all! With that being said, I was pleasantly moved by BIAS’ performance and melodic rendition of such a classic film. If you enjoy electronic music and remember the aforementioned movie vividly, then how about giving “Amsterdam” a shot?
