Paris-based neoclassical composer Serij d’Artosis has a gift for turning emotion into atmosphere, and with “Rêve 3: Narges,” he delivers one of his most affecting works to date. Featured on the EP Vestiges de Rêves, the composition draws inspiration from the resilience of a single mother navigating the horrors of war while protecting her child. d’Artosis lets melody and tension carry the story.
The track begins with a delicate rush of piano notes, glimmering and cascading like light reflecting off moving water. The opening feels intimate and fragile, yet purposeful, as if each note is searching for stability amid uncertainty. Soon, the rapid ripples settle into a more measured pulse, allowing the piano to breathe. Swelling strings gradually emerge from the background warmly.
As the piece unfolds, a subtle heartbeat-like rhythm becomes apparent beneath the arrangement. It is this pulse that gives “Rêve 3: Narges” its sense of urgency. The music seems to mirror the emotional state of someone balancing fear and hope simultaneously. Then, during the bridge, the atmosphere thickens dramatically. Strings begin to writhe and pulse with cinematic suspense, building tension in waves while the piano continues its elegant flow. With beauty and anxiety intertwined, neither is willing to let go of the other.
What makes the composition especially compelling is its ability to tell a vivid story without a single lyric. Influences from Ludovico Einaudi’s emotional minimalism and the cinematic grandeur of film composers can be felt throughout, yet the piece maintains its own identity. The hybrid approach of combining acoustic piano with carefully crafted digital orchestration creates a rich, immersive soundscape.
By the time the piano grows more passionate in the final passages, “Rêve 3: Narges” feels less like a composition and more like a lived experience. Elegant, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful, it stands as the emotional centerpiece of Vestiges de Rêves.
