Allan Jamisen’s debut single “Rise Above” is a shimmering, soulful ode to resilience, drenched in nostalgia and layered with subtle sonic surprises. The Phoenix-based composer and painter makes an immediate impression with his slow-burning, velvet-rich vocals, part sung, part spoke, delivered with understated confidence that calls to mind Johnny Cash on a desert sunrise drive. But where Cash leaned into grit, Jamisen threads that same stoicism through a warmer, dreamier filter.
The song opens with soft, sparkling guitar strums, setting a tranquil but emotionally charged tone. Then his calm, thick, and unhurried voice arrives, like a reflective monologue drifting out from a porch at twilight. On the other hand, rumbling drums create a gentle momentum and the production expands as it moves forward, gradually blooming into a mix of gospel-inspired soul and quietly anthemic pop-rock. Then the female backing vocals bring an ethereal softness, wrapping around Jamisen’s words like a balm, while electric guitar flourishes dance in the background, slithering through the layers without ever overwhelming them.
Lyrically, “Rise Above” wears its heart on its sleeve. There’s no posturing or cryptic metaphor—just a man trying to turn pain into purpose, hate into love, through measured storytelling and unwavering belief in creative freedom.
Co-produced with John X Volaitis, “Rise Above” teases Jamisen’s upcoming ten-track album, and it’s hard not to feel drawn into the larger narrative he’s hinting at. With a career that’s already spanned LA clubs, Denmark galleries, and collaborations with pros like Danny Saber, Jamisen’s debut in recorded music is coming strong.
