Hailing from Windsor, Don’t Look Now thrive on storytelling and they do that with heartfelt sweetness on “Second Time Around.” this lot that’s equal parts cheeky and heartfelt, blending rock, pop, soul, and even a splash of reggae into something that feels refreshingly offbeat. Originally released back in 2003 as part of Like the do it in the Films, the track still holds up, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why it’s remained their most-streamed tune.
Right from the jump, “Second Time Around” leans into its feel-good DNA. The saxophone intro struts in like it owns the room. It’s bright, playful, and just a little bit nostalgic, before the rhythm section kicks things into gear. The drums come in bustling and steady, the guitars shimmer with that sunlit glow, and suddenly you’re not just listening, you’re on holiday. Ibiza, to be precise. The instrumentation has that easy-breezy charm, but with a groove, it keeps everything ticking along with infectious energy.
Then come the vocals, warm and inviting. The lead singer delivers the story with a rich, easygoing tone, while subtle female backing vocals drift in like sea air, adding a soft, almost dreamy contrast. Lyrically, it’s all about rekindled romance, as he sings in the chorus, “falling in love again, second time around with you.” He paints the art of falling back in love through snapshots of moonlit beaches, ships on the horizon, and lazy afternoons stretched out on the sand. It’s vivid, a little sentimental, and romantic.
What really seals the deal, though, is how effortlessly it all comes together. The horns sway, the groove carries you, and the storytelling pulls you in without trying too hard. The track gets you humming along, caught in its sun-drenched, sax-laced glow.
