Orlando trio Kill The Joy crash back into the scene with โSix Seasons and A Movie,โ a punchy, emotionally frayed anthem that wears its heart very much on its sleeve. Formed out of teenage restlessness and sharpened through DIY grit, the band, led by Mali Lawrence alongside Jaiden Walker and Anthony Ferguson, leans fully into the confusions of growing up, while struggling with self-doubt, and that nagging feeling of never quite fitting in. As a preview of their upcoming album, KILL THE JOY, the track turns things around.
The song wastes no time getting going. Driving melodic guitars kick things off, quickly chased by pelting drums and splashing cymbals that give it that classic pop-punk urgency. Lawrenceโs voice barrels in with this raw desperation of stretching itself to the limit as if every note is trying to outrun the thoughts behind it. And somehow, even at its most strained, it sticks. He is absolutely charismatic, contagious, and impossible to ignore.
Lyrically, โSix Seasons and A Movieโ digs into insecurity, as Lawrence sings that heโs โno leading man,โ getting behind the low self-worth, and he shows heโs unsure as he sings, โIโm holding on to maybe.โ With this constant tug-of-war between fantasy and reality, he navigates the paths of wanting to be seen but feeling invisible, wanting to belong, but second-guessing every step. His recurring line, โYou can be my favorite movie scene,โ comes as a metaphor that ties it all together, hinting at escapism while also exposing just how fragile that escape really is.
As โSix Seasons and A Movieโ barrels forward, it builds toward release. By the end, it leaves you mid-spiral, clinging to โmaybe.โ Check it out on Spotify.
