We As Gods, the project of Brazilian producer Thiago Barlanza, drifts into introspective territory with “Enough,” which feels like it was made for those quiet, heavy moments you don’t quite know how to name. Split between Rio and Lisbon influences, the sound leans into psych-pop and dream pop textures, but it’s the emotional undercurrent that really does the talking. Featuring the delicate, mesmerizing vocals of Bryony-may Onions, “Enough” immerses you in a philosophy.
“Enough” opens steadily, as thumping beats are paired with splashing cymbals, while calm, meditative guitars hover in the background like a distant thought. The vocal entry is subdued at first, almost spoken, before easing into a soft, weary melody. He sings slowly, “Always doing more than I am… Never be enough.” The pace ponders with the weight of reality upon the singer’s back.
As the track unfolds, it pulls back at one point. The drums fade, leaving the guitars to stretch out into something slower, more reflective. And then comes the conversation. A back-and-forth emerges, as he asks, “What is enough?” to which Bryony-may echoes his query. He continues, “For me, to the world.” She responds, “No one knows.” This, he repeats. Conversely, she says, “I know,” as if her perspective has changed mid-conversation. After a few more words have passed, at the end, he concludes, “We carry on exhausted.”
“Enough” is an intriguing reality check that makes you question your purpose in this world and so much more. Check out We As Gods’ latest release on Spotify.
