Sunstreets, the Southampton-based alt-rock outfit led by Lisa Turner, tap into something powerful with “Northern Lights,” like a gentle nudge to keep dreaming, even when the world rolls its eyes. Built on their signature blend of melodic rock and heartfelt storytelling, the band channels influences from classic and modern rock into something warm, relatable, and just a little bit wistful. And funnily enough when you know that the song originated from a few scribbled lines during a 9-to-5 workday, fits perfectly with its message, because it reeks of big dreams starting in those smallest moments.
“Northern Lights” opens with an easy, inviting groove, as thumping drums set the pace while sparkling cymbals flicker like, well, distant stars. Then the sweet, chiming, and slightly glossy guitars come in, glowing like the whole arrangement. The sound pulls you in slowly, like a late evening drive with the windows down.
Lisa Turner’s rich, tender and soothing voice is the real anchor here, as she sings reassuringly and comfortingly. When she sings, “The sight so special you could only dream of,” you understand she’s holding onto something beautiful. And that idea carries through the chorus, where “Hold on, hold on, it will happen one day” lands like both reassurance and a plea.
Lyrically, the metaphor does a lot of heavy lifting. The northern lights become this almost mythical vision, of something vivid and real to you, but invisible to everyone else. It’s that ambition and the dream that is waiting to be fulfilled by you.
By the time the song fades out, “Northern Lights” leaves behind a promise you’re still learning to believe in.
