Alt-country duo Glass Cabin, consisting of Jess Brown and David Flint, have delivered a striking cover of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic “The Chain.” By blending their distinct alt-country style with the classic rock song, Brown’s vocal prowess and Flint’s instrumentals create a fresh and powerful rendition.
The cover introduces a more rustic and vibrant energy compared to the original. Instead of Fleetwood Mac’s harder beats, Glass Cabin employs lively percussion, mandolin, and banjo, handled by Flint. The folk-like charm gets its counterbalancing ingredient from Brown’s deeper and thicker vocals and their grounded sincerity. His delivery is steady and deliberate, transforming the verses into something more earnest, contrasting with the original’s whimsical soulfulness.
When the chorus arrives, Brown’s voice grows more animated and powerful, pushing the message of the song with renewed vigor. The guitars build underneath, while the drums rap along to create a spirited, gritty backdrop.
In Fleetwood Mac’s version, the bridge broods and builds to a high, writhing electric guitar solo. Glass Cabin’s take, however, keeps the mood country and folksy yet bustling with the hard-hitting drums. Meanwhile, the steely banjo plucks keep a soft zest to the music.
Glass Cabin’s cover of “The Chain” is so dynamic and engaging, yet somewhat tied to the original that you can’t help but sing along to the vigorous renewed version. With the duo’s third studio album in the works, this track is a promising glimpse of what’s to come from this talented pair. Stay in the loop with Glass Cabin.
