The Only Thing by Pullstring: Review
“The Only Thing” by Pullstring was released in November 25th, 2022. It is an alternative/indie rock band from Minneapolis, MN. The band consist of Alex “Full Tone” Fuller on Vocal and guitar, Connor “Conno” Gonzalez on bass, Josh “Smokin” Toke on guitar and Tristan “The Magnet” McGlauchlen on drums and percussion. Their lyricism and beautiful melodies have early 2000s rock band vibes like the “stereophonics” or “The Fray”. The electric guitar has a very distinct 90s-2000s tone with its distorted aggressive approach. The short yet very appropriate bursts of the wailing of the lead guitar throughout the song perfectly accentuates the personality of the song.
The vocals are raw and simple, with a deep undertone and longing which perfectly highlights the lyrics of the song. There are no dramatic runs or belts but that is exactly what the atmosphere of the song entails. The supporting instruments are the perfect accessory for the simple yet engaging vocal. The harmonies are also minimal but appropriate and not overused. The repetition of the chorus is simple as well, but doesn’t make the song boring or repetitive. In fact, it makes complete sense as it accentuates the emotions and the purpose the lyrics are trying to convey to the listeners.
Overall, it was a well composed song with originality and variations of alternative and indie rock. The listeners will enjoy the track very much because of its magically nostalgic sound.
