On March 15th of this year, Indie Surf Pop singer and producer Josephine released Time or Whatever and Cat Mama from her upcoming debut album coming out this month. And from what I can tell, it’s going to sell out! Josephine is outdoing herself with more than 5,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and thousands of streams.
Based in Venice, CA, Josephine released Time or Whatever to call out modern dating apps after having gathered experience using them to meet people. It just seemed too transactional and systematic. Cat Mama, on the other hand, is a whole different story. While “Time or Whatever” wonders what she “could do” with their “love,” Cat Mama is a heartfelt song about wanting to grow old with someone and their cats and “fighting till the end” to make it to the finish line.
You know Josephine is an original with her honest lyricism and catchy yet easy and relaxed melodies. The synth waves with the electronic beats give her more of an atmospheric feel in Time or Whatever. She has a diaristic story-telling ability, but it’s less tangible and more philosophical. The lyrics, “All this unfinished business/ All eyes on my wishlist/ Saved it for rainy days/ But the rain never came,” are a vivid testament to her poetic imagination.
While the first track, Time or Whatever, had a calm electronica beat playing alongside, Cat Mama is more acoustic, with strings and drums pumping up to a rhythm, letting the music ebb and flow like a receding wave. The retro vibes in Cat Mama, along with a romanticized lifestyle, make you nostalgic for experiences you never had.
