There’s something quietly disarming about Ryan Page’s debut EP used to be you, just sits beside you and lets the feelings creep in. Hailing from Glenrothes, the Scottish songwriter leans into a soft folk foundation, but with the help of production duo SIRENS, the project drifts into a hazy alt-indie dreamscape. Born out of a messy breakup, the EP carries that fragile, post-heartbreak stillness, where everything feels suspended in time. Think late-night overthinking, long walks, and melodies that linger like unfinished thoughts.
“I Was Wrong” sets the tone right away, and yeah, it hits where it hurts. Gentle guitar strums and faint piano glimmers create a tender backdrop as Page’s high, husky voice slips in, soft, almost hesitant. There’s an innocence in how he delivers the lines, like he’s still trying to process the realization himself. The song circles around regret and misplaced certainty, unpacking the devastation of believing someone was the one, only to watch that idea unravel.
By the time “Nothing Helps” rolls in, the emotional weight feels heavier, more settled. The acoustic textures remain stripped-back, but there’s a deeper sense of exhaustion here. Page sings about being stuck in the aftermath, trying, and failing, to pull himself out of the emotional fog. It’s that frustrating heartbreak where healing just won’t hurry up. And honestly, that realism lands.
Then comes “Little Did I Know,” and things shift, subtly, but beautifully. Featuring SIRENS, the track opens with a delicate female vocal that feels almost otherworldly. When their voices intertwine, it creates this intimate push-and-pull, like two perspectives echoing the same memory. It’s vulnerable, understated, and quietly mesmerizing.
All in all, used to be you just lets heartbreak exist, and sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
