The German solo artist, Marc, known as “bandwithoutband” has garnered tens of thousands of listens on the streaming service Spotify because of his distinctive sound and evident ability. His current single, “Wake Up,” features only the artist and his dark, foreboding tone, yet sounds like it was written and performed by a full band.
The grungy, hardcore tune will catch your attention right away and take you to an eerie realm. Marc’s voice is intentionally deep and eerie (in a good way), and the extensive usage of synths throughout the album contributes to a gloomy vibe. Lyrically, the song is about waking up from a nightmare, which bears some resemblance to its original industrial context. Aside from inspiring you to stand and wave your hands to its music, “Wake Up” will also get you to think deeper. Imagine waking up to find yourself in a life-or-death situation, and all you have is a wake-up call that whisks you away with its tune to an entirely different universe.
The single is a dark, dismal hybrid of alternative rock and post-punk that may come out more as “hard rock” to certain listeners. With almost 17,000 plays in a little over a month, it’s clear that Marc is on the right track. Listeners who aren’t accustomed to industrial rock may find bandwithoutband intimidating, but those who enjoy alternative rock or metal should give it a try. Without a doubt, “Wake Up” is a great addition to your rock playlist.
