Water Water by Coconut Shy: Review
The calming percussion, maracas, and simple guitar progression are all soothing to the ears as it eases you into the song. Then the suave, classic voice of Coconut Shy flows in as a wave washes upon the shore.
Melbourne-based artist Coconut Shyโ, real name Joseph Mackey is an acoustic-folk singer/songwriter with vocal techniques and lyrical capabilities similar to some all-time greats such as James Taylor, Jeff Buckley, and Dire Straits. His writing is detailed and reminiscent of feelings of love, loss, aspiration, and inspiration. Shy has received stellar reviews upon the release of his debut EP โJapan Townโ, receiving compliments for his songwriting and for combining authentic, ear-perking vocals with a peaceful acoustic guitar.
โWater, Waterโ is the first of two singles Shy plans to release before the year is out. With nostalgic lyrics and a storytelling approach, Shy catches the listenersโ attention with lyrics that touch your soul in a melancholic, optimistic sort of way. His lyrics focus heavily on colors, nature, and scenic descriptions, blending metaphorically with his feelings and experiences.
The theme of โwaterโ is especially strong throughout the entirety of the song. It makes sense as the introduction feels very much like a tropical sunset of pinks and oranges with the blue water shimmering with golden waves crashing on the silver shore.
As Shy said, โโWaterโ in this song, represents those simpler things that can โspill some lifeโ on someone finding it difficult to let goโ. His song is like a wave, washing the regrets and pain of the past away; cleansing oneself for new beginnings.
