A Space Between by The Numb Project is less an album and more a slow-motion plunge into a dreamscape made of velvet beats and shimmering textures. Portland producer Chris Calarco invites you into a liminal world, somewhere between dusk and dawn, chaos and calm. Right from the opening track, โA Monkstโ, youโre pulled in with thunderous beats before rippling piano keys pour in like morning light through half-closed blinds. Itโs moody, grounded, and meditative all at once, the kind of track that makes your heart tap its own thoughtful rhythm.
Track after track, Calarco blends lo-fi, abstract hip-hop, downtempo, and trip-hop into a sound that feels both familiar and alien, like dรฉjร vu in musical form. Take โBloomโ, for example: it writhes and stretches, reaching toward the sun, before relaxed, boom-bap beats kick in, held afloat by ambient swirls that feel like glitter dusted across the sky.
By the time you reach โEmpty Impasseโ, with its icy taps and warm sound layers unfolding like breath on glass, youโre deep in the pocket of this albumโs meditative groove. And then โ5 AMโ rolls around, the sonic equivalent of lying in bed just before sunrise, not quite awake, not quite dreaming, with gentle beats and distant cries wrapping around you like a familiar old blanket.
A Space Between lets you drift, reflect, wander. Itโs music for walking through foggy streets or sitting in your car after midnight just processing life. Calarco checks in with your emotional weather systems in this space between noise and stillness.ย Listen to the album on Spotify.
