Do you love horror movies? Benevolent Prince by Ripsime is your musical equivalent to a cross-over of horror movies with a slasher-thriller. The vocals themselves will give you chills, and letโs not even start with the musical production. What sets it apart from other modern music is not just its creepy overtones.
From the mixing to the vocal layering, Benevolent Prince is an absolutely original piece of ingenious craft. That calls for a shout-out to the producer and songwriter Luke Turner. Mixed and mastered by Tom Donovan and Jonas Karlsson, respectively, the song combines the old with the new in the most eccentric and menacing manner.
Classical instrumentals amalgamate with electronica, and sometimes one follows the other. Itโs truly out of this worldโor should we say, itโs paranormal? Benevolent Prince gives you a supernatural experience with the high-pitched head voice of Ripsime, beginning with a trembling and blood-curdling goblin-like tone that becomes more overpowering and confident in the chorus. Ripsimeโs voice is like a knife that sharpens and cuts through the guitars and synths. Then it smooths over the instrumentals with a siren-like hallowing wailing, only to follow through with a pitchy whisper.
The creepy vibe of Benevolent Prince is further accentuated by the single cover art, which showcases an erratic abstract figure with even stranger features painted over. Now for the context, where does all this erraticism stem from?
Ripsime was in Armenia, her homeland, when it was bombed, and having to record this record all over the continent gave the sound its own history and trauma. If it sounds horrific, it must have actually been way worse than you could imagine. But if you love yourself some spooks and a brilliant artist like Ripsime to start with, listen to Benevolent Prince.
