Seattle-based indie alt-rock band The Sleepy Haunts introduces listeners to their latest EP, Bloom Vol. 1. The band ends this year navigating envy, responsibilities, relationships and conscientiousness.
The opening track, โwhy do i feel this way?โ immediately immerses you in frontwoman and singer/songwriter Gillian McMahonโs strawberry-sweet and luscious vocals. Her delivery, ranging effortlessly from low to high tones, enhances the transparent and vulnerable lyrics. Amidst immersive synths, jamming guitar melodies by Josiah Massari, thumping drums by Sevastian Dingler, and bassist Noah Wagerโs contribution, the song explores envy in all its power and reality.
โstanding, waiting,โ the second track, exudes a relaxing feel, resonating with diaristic lyrics that carry an Olivia Rodrigo vibe. I can relate to the sentiments of burnout and the struggle to pay attention when dealing with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The lyrics speak to the burned-out individuals who are forced to carry the load, echoing the experience of the fictional Jo March.
Shifting to a more upbeat and gritty atmosphere, โthe end(morning after),โ the third track, introduces a driven energy. The song is a wonderful pop-fictional ode to Gillianโs boyfriend, as she compares him to Spiderman.
Closing with โthe end (morning after),โ Bloom Vol. 1. takes a haunting turn with guitar riffing and slow vocals. The gritty and driven bridge adds intensity to the songโs overarching theme, speaking for those impacted by the overturning of Roe V. Wade.
If you love 90s music and a modern indie alt-rock sensibility, then donโt forget to check out The Sleepy Haunts and their upcoming releases. Also, keep a look out because an album may be coming soon! Till then, blast to (or cry to) Bloom Vol. 1.
