There’s a certain stormy resilience woven into Alex Winters’s music, and “Break In” might be one of her most quietly powerful entries yet. Now based in Austin but shaped by a grunge-era upbringing in Seattle, Winters channels a life marked by upheaval into something raw but controlled. This 2026 single, part of her collaboration with London production house Animal Farm and producer Mat Leppanen, leans into ‘90s pop-rock nostalgia. It’s about the risk of letting someone past the damage.
“Break In” opens on a moody, warm guitar line, like it’s testing the emotional waters before diving in. Then the beat taps in, light at first, steady and deliberate, while shimmering guitar chords begin to fill out the space. There are just layers stacking slowly until the track finds its footing.
Winters’ voice comes in with that signature edge. It’s high, slightly husky, and emotionally loaded. She sings with restraint, which somehow makes the vulnerability hit harder. She sings, “My heart’s been locked up for so long / And if you don’t mind the scars, break in, break in,” capturing that internal tug-of-war between self-protection and longing, and desiring someone to make the decision for her.
As the drums settle into a more defined rhythm, the track opens up just enough to feel expansive without losing its intimacy. There’s a subtle catchiness in the way everything locks together—melody, rhythm, and emotion moving in sync.
What makes “Break In” stick is the tension at its core. It’s about surrender, but not easily. Trust, but with hesitation.
In the end, Winters makes you feel what it costs, when you let it go. Check out “Break In” on Spotify.
