Can we dance to this by Clifford: Review
Joy, or the concept of joy, is both hollow and touchable, in part because it’s something that can come in many forms of experience. This summer, Clifford has packed three minutes of pure joy in the form of a playful, poppy, energetic song called “Can we dance to this”.
I’m not sure what genre would best describe this track. It’s a brilliant mix of pop/indie pop with a strong jazz and R&B influence throughout. Clifford uses a secret recipe of ear-catching melodies, skipping piano, and snare drums to create a certain feel to the song that rests midway between the retro sound of the seventies and the ultra-modern sound of today. Every aspect of it exudes the vitality of youth when there are so many new adventures and opportunities waiting for you. Specifically, when writing this song, the singer was influenced by the so-called “dates” on dating apps nowadays, so he came up with the concept of “making a request to someone you’ve never met yet”. And he was pretty straightforward about it, singing:
“This song’s for the one I’ve never met
I needed to get this off my chest
I dream of you nightly in my bed
My message to you is a request”
Clifford has once again established himself as a strong contender for the title of “perfect summer hit.” Whether you’re starting or ending your day, this single is the perfect feel-good song to add to your playlist. Can we get up and dance to this? Yes. Without a doubt, yes!
