Wattmore has never been a band to play it safe, and with their latest single, “Canadian Whiskey,” released September 26, 2025, they’ve doubled down on irreverence. The Australian brother duo, known for blurring the lines between country, punk, and straight-up chaos, pitch this track as their “career suicide note set to music.” But in truth, it feels less like a swan dive and more like a cheeky victory lap. Co-written with legendary songwriter Allan Caswell and shaped by producer Lindsay Waddington, the song distills Wattmore’s essence: brash, witty, and unafraid to ruffle feathers while raising a glass.
The music kicks off with light, glistening country chords, acoustic guitars strumming and plucking in tandem with toe-tapping beats. With a lightness, looseness, and chirpiness in their voices, the duo trade lines with a contagious sense of fun. You will hear the fiddle too, writhing jubilantly.
The lyrics, meanwhile, lean into satire, while realistically actually calling for a boycott of American alcohol…as a way of perhaps stopping the dependence on American things altogether. They belt this humorous, soon-to-be-singalong line, “Canadian whiskey / Mexican tequila… good Australia red with a nice French champagne taster / Drinking men don’t need the USA,” playfully taking a jab at the neglected country to send the message across, while celebrating global spirits. The refrain “We can get our alcohol from anywhere we want to / We will keep drinking anything but yours” sharpens the edge with the send-up of cultural monopoly, wrapped in booze-soaked defiance.
“Canadian Whiskey” works because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a sly toast to independence, as it reminds us that Wattmore’s best weapon has always been the way they turn mischief into music that sticks.
