J Terrell’s Cowboy Tango gallops straight through the fences of genre. From the moment “Shark” rolls in with its gentle piano, sparkling cymbals, and satisfyingly heavy drums, you can tell this is getting good. J’s vocals are playful and flirty, the kind that glide effortlessly across the beat while the backing vocals toss in a little sass for good measure.
Then comes “Heaven,” and the mood shifts. Deep, smug beats build like a storm on the horizon, while the music above them flows heavy and fluid. J’s high, soulful voice floats over it all, dripping with heartache and melancholy. It’s smooth, almost hypnotic, with each line melting into the next.
By the time you hit “Backstroke,” the album has you fully strapped into its joyfully chaotic ride. A warped, distorted voice kicks things off before settling into a laid-back groove of soft beats and mellow textures. J keeps it cool and nonchalant, while talking about the most sizzling hot, narrative-rich things ever with so much description. He’s so smart, he made sure not to cross into the explicit, so that you find you might not have expected. But then again, the title gives it away. It’s cheeky, it’s descriptive, and it’s got that sly hook—“Caught you seeing stars when we do the cowboy tango”—that sticks in your head like it’s been there forever.
Cowboy Tango is a bold debut that proves you can be experimental, heartfelt, and downright fun all at once. Check it out on Spotify.
