Rootless takes a daring leap into the ecstatic world of Sufi music with “Dam Mast Qalandar,” transforming the legendary qawwali into a vibrant cross-cultural celebration. Based in Glasgow, the collective brings together Indian and Roma musicians, not to force traditions together, but to highlight the natural threads that have connected them for centuries through melody, ornamentation, rhythm, and storytelling. Following the attention generated by their debut “RakiTakitaNana,” this second single feels both rooted in history and thrillingly alive in the present.
The track wastes no time igniting the atmosphere. A blazing horn section bursts forward with infectious, dance-driven energy, immediately setting a festive tone. Steady, excited drums thump underneath while the lead vocalist repeatedly chants the iconic titular line with growing intensity. Moments later, a Roma singer enters the arrangement, adding another layer of character and emotional texture. The interaction between the Indian and Roma voices becomes the song’s heartbeat, creating a dialogue that feels celebratory.
As the performance unfolds, the arrangement keeps building in waves. Tabla patterns ripple beneath punchier dhol rhythms, the saxophone cuts through with exhilarating flourishes, and the chorus swells into something that feels almost communal. What makes Rootless particularly compelling is how naturally these influences coexist. Bhangra energy, Roma folk expression, and Sufi devotion flow into one another without sounding stitched together. The piece invites movement while still carrying the spiritual surrender and longing that made the original qawwali so powerful.
The accompanying video amplifies that sense of theatrical devotion. Classical Indian dance, dramatic stage-like tableaux, and symbolic imagery—fire rendered through red fabric and water through flowing blue cloth—turn the performance into a visual ritual. The choreography mirrors the music’s rising intensity, making the entire experience feel immersive and ceremonial.
Beyond its infectious groove, “Dam Mast Qalandar” carries a deeper message about belonging, migration, and shared heritage. Rootless use music as a bridge between cultures that have long echoed one another across generations.
