“Dream Weapon” by King In Yellow hits like a beautiful punch to the face, loud, grimy, and cathartic in the way only great alt-rock can be. Straight out of Kingston, these guys came to burn something down (emotionally, at least). From the first electrified shriek of guitar, you’re thrown into a relentless churn: high, writhing distortion coils over a second, meatier riff that revs like a pissed-off engine. Then the drums slam in, cymbals flashing like warning signs.
The vocals are where things get really interesting. Thick and grave, the singer starts almost like he’s biting back emotion, each line repressed but bubbling. Then, bam, he lets go. His voice hollers, tense and cracked with rage, channeling all the isolating weirdness of being alive in a world that never slows down.
Recorded in the woods of New Paltz with their friends and the ghost of every 90s alt icon hanging in the trees, Dream Weapon sounds like it’s soaked in sweat, beer, and sincerity. You can practically feel the pine needles and amplifier feedback. The hybrid recording approach—half live, half modern—preserves the kind of energy that’s hard to fake. It’s like Sonic Youth and Mudhoney threw a rager with The Cure on aux, and King In Yellow took notes.
If this is just the first punch from their upcoming EP All is Loneliness, then buckle up. King In Yellow are here to tap into that primal scream we’ve all been holding in. And trust me, Dream Weapon hits the mark.
