Germany-based rapper Jeanna-Sis debuts with an authentic heartbreak album EYES WIDE OPEN. With tracks that range from soulful ballads to hard-hitting rap anthems, this album showcases Jeanna-Sis’s versatility as an artist and storyteller.
The album opens with “SKIT: MEET & GREET,” a clever rhyming introduction that sets the stage for what’s to come. From there, we dive into “FRENEMY,” a candid reflection on Jeanna’s push-and-pull relationship with her first boyfriend. The slow, melancholic piano tones and ethereal vocals create a haunting backdrop for her candid and introspective lyrics.
As EYES WIDE OPEN progresses, we’re treated to the album’s single, “Not Enough.” The song will have you singing along to the anthemic dueting chorus, “You toy with my emotions and try to play it off/So if you say you are sorry I will say it’s not enough.” The track leads to the vulnerable and seductive ode to love and desire, “Take Your Top Off,” making it hard to let go of a destructive affair.
But it’s perhaps on “Crystal Clear” that Jeanna truly shines. With its cinematic production, swelling with smug soundscapes and thumping beats, the song captures the moment when the smoke of delusion clears and reality comes crashing in. Jeanna’s delivery is acerbic and powerful, conveying a sense of anger and vengeance that empowers.
EYES WIDE OPEN is quite a stunner for a debut that only makes you wonder how much Jeanna-Sis has left to show us. If you love Eminem’s fiercely fast raps, you will love hers too.
