Swedish-Finnish artist Mattias Lies honors Edith Södergran’s poetry with his interpretative album, Rösten från det Karelska näset/The Voice from the Karelian Isthmus released on April 23rd. Lies pours his heart and soul into this seventh album, as he expresses himself in shades of the Finnish-Swedish poet that he so well connects with.
Rösten från det Karelska näset came as a form of self-discovery with him finding his roots, losing his mother and Södergran guiding him along the way. The instrumentation on the album is rich and replete with soprano sax, pipe, piano and double bass creating an organic and orchestral experience billowing straight from the wistful woods.
Rösten från det Karelska näset opens with “Du som aldrig gått ut ur ditt trädgårdsland” (You Who Have Never Left Your Garden) showcasing soft guitar strumming, gentle piano melodies, and haunting arrangements to create a serene and introspective atmosphere. Similarly, “21.7.1908” captivates with its mysterious piano tunes and swelling solos, inviting listeners into a world of contemplation and reflection.
In “Vägen till lyckan” (The Road to Happiness), Lies infuses the song with a subtle exhilaration, accompanied by soothing vocals and raw and breezy melodies that evoke feelings of hope and contentment.
The album culminates with “Grubbelhymn” (Rumination Hymn) which enchants with its layers of raw and breathy trailing pipe blows, as the wistful guitar strums in sync with the singer’s contemplative and upfront vocals.
Listen to Rösten från det Karelska näset by Mattias Lies to be inspired by authentic, literary storytelling.
