False Nostalgia by Unapologetically Melodic: Review
If you’re looking for a Neo-Classical album to help convey strange nostalgic feelings and fabricated recollections, “False Nostalgia” by Unapologetically Melodic is a great choice. The Canadian composer released this album, of five piano solos, that take the listener on a journey back to the Victorian era.
The first solo piano piece is “Anemoia” which is a strange form of nostalgia for time or places that you’ve never known, hence bringing on a feeling of anemoia. The song has a flowing melody line and ear-pleasing harmonies, that carry the peculiar nature of the emotion. The second song named “Easthallow Moors” has a faster melody that takes the listeners by surprise with the addition of a heavy bass piano. The next song, “Bircham Manor” is a thought-evoking piano and cello piece inspired by Victorian-era poetry. It is a beautiful reminder of the temporary state of the world– a sonic “memento mori” if you will.
The fourth track calms and takes listeners to a world of soft, deep, and pleasant melodies set in beautiful vistas in Europe and other poetic places from the past. The album comes full circle with its title track, ‘False Nostalgia’. False Nostalgia means that a person’s recollection of an event does not match how it actually occurred, or that in the most extreme situations, they recall an event that did not occur. The vivid melodies sure carry the same warmth and comfort that one’s mind makes up when recalling something they hold near and dear to their heart.
