‘F*****g Up What Matters’ is the new single from Tegan and Sara.

Tegan and Sara, a Canadian duo, are the embodiment of musical growth. The singer-songwriter identical twins are continually shifting with the times, with a wide back-catalogue rumbling in the realms of brooding indie-rock before erupting into the world of synth-pop. And, if their new track ‘Fucking Up What Matters’ and their new label signing with Mom+Pop are any indication, it’s time for their next step.
The new track ‘Fucking Up What Matters,’ co-produced with John Congleton, taps into the twins’ love of synths, a glittering explosion of tongue-in-cheek appeal. It’s a track that seems like a beam of sunshine, with its upbeat percussion and whimsical instrumentals.
The song delves into the scary sensation of wanting to burn everything down and start over. “It seemed like a tribute to the time in your life when you realize you had most, if not all, of the things you wanted and you start to wonder about what would happen if you just walked away from it all,” Tegan Quin said of the single. It’s the sensation you get when you think you’ve reached a new low, yet you’ve never felt better.”
It’s logical that these thoughts are simmering beneath the surface after nine albums. Fortunately, the duo’s ingenuity has never been put to the test; they have a graphic novel duology, Tegan & Sara: Junior High and Tegan & Sara: Crush, on the way. And the twins are no strangers to the publishing world; in 2019, they wrote the New York Times bestseller memoir ‘High School,’ which is currently being converted into an Amazon Freevee coming-of-age TV series of the same name.
There’s no stopping these two creative individuals, and there’s no telling what the future holds for them.
