In Fractured Reality, the debut EP by Riverlabs, Chilean architect-turned-producer Cristian Ríos builds an atmosphere. True to his design background, each track is meticulously layered, merging glitchy abrasion with ambient warmth to evoke a strangely intimate alienation. Since launching Riverlabs in 2024, Ríos has taken a uniquely architectural approach to sound: he is constructing emotional spaces where listeners can lose themselves in distortion and rediscover their own sense of disconnection.
The opening track, “Fractured Truth,” sets the tone with icy precision with its thick, metallic and mechanical beats dropping like weighted steel, while sharp pulses create a cold urgency. Yet, amidst the tension, the vocals arrive with unexpected charm and tenderness. Ríos sings with vulnerable gravity, balancing the chaos with warmth. Beneath this, a reverberated monologue voice—calm, rogueish, and philosophical—offers cryptic insights, grounding the track in an eerie narrative weight.
By the time we reach “Synthetic Hearts,” the EP shifts into a more emotionally charged register. Against a brooding backdrop of dark synths and shimmering pulses, Ríos belts the line “Synthetic hearts beating for no one” with aching clarity. The steady beat of the drums feels almost heartbeat-like, anchoring the digital swirl in something humane. It’s a dystopian love song, where connection is craved but out of reach, and the machine becomes a vessel for loneliness.
The closing track, “The Last Connection,” softens everything into a kind of elegy. A ticking pulse emerges from a glimmering ambient bed, while the vocals take on a mournful, introspective tone. A delicate piano glides through the haze as Ríos sings, and by the end, the track dissolves into a dreamy shimmer, like waking up from a forgotten memory.
