Francis Fell is a soul rock trio inspired by classic rock icons from the ‘60s through the ‘80s. And now they have got their self-titled EP out of the shell. “No Small Bones” opens the EP with gentle, chiming guitar riffs and a deep, reflective bassline, creating a somber yet comforting tone. Feller’s rich, melancholic vocals lead us into a contemplative exploration of change, loss, and introspection. The song’s verses build slowly, like an unraveling story, with steady drum rhythms and shimmering guitar layers that swell to fill the song’s atmosphere. Lyrically, it meditates on resilience and vulnerability, offering lines like, “If you fall and you will, just be still and hide your weakness.”
Francis Fell’s second track, “Rowboat Me Home,” slows things down with soothing guitar tones and organ accompaniment, evoking a relaxed yet somber mood. The lyrics, full of resignation and reflection, explore themes of solitude and introspection: “Sad to see it’s too familiar/ Bear no gifts I call my own.” The instrumental layers are sparse yet purposeful, each note and word adding to a sense of quiet, personal longing.
“Walls” rounds out the EP with some more passion subtly dispersed in delicate, breathy vocals. The heavy strum of guitars only elevates the excitement. backed by harmonized vocals that create a rich, layered effect. The backing vocals of Scott Schiaffo and David Biglin join Fellers and sing along, creating a powerful moment as he sings with passion rising, “As I lay you down you wear my skin/Hold tightly now and don’t give in…” The theme of resilience is revisited as the song’s crescendo reaches a powerful conclusion, with the repeated line, “As the walls around here come down,” reinforcing the idea of breaking down emotional barriers.
