Mothership Radio’s debut album Gravity Is Situational is a dazzling jam-fueled joyride through the stars, where funk flirts with psych-rock and gravity does feel like a flexible concept. The Brooklyn-based six-piece, fronted by the magnetic Ria Burns-Wilder, pulls no punches with this genre-defying project released on May 22, 2025. From the first horn blast to the last cosmic synth swirl, “Gravity Is Situational” sounds like a band having the time of their lives.
The opening track, “Five Alarm Fire,” is an instant ignition. Street honks kick things off, but it’s the fuzzy guitars, thumping drums, and sparkling cymbals that spark the fire. Then comes Ria, pouring her rich, melting vocals into the mix, her voice gliding over euphoric riffs and enthusiastic horns like she owns the night. It’s charisma in motion—powerful, playful, and soul-deep. The unapologetic rawness to her performance is polished by the tight groove the band locks into like seasoned veterans.
By the time you reach track four, “Algorhythmia,” airy, zooming sounds lead into a swirling stew of guitar and backbeat tension. It’s immersive, constantly shape-shifting, almost like the song itself can’t sit still. And Ria rides the current effortlessly, her lines soaring and morphing as the music contorts around her.
Then comes the closer, “Intellidance,” the nearly 10-minute, genre-hopping behemoth that cements the album’s ambition. Synths swirl, guitars flash, drums punch, and Ria spits rhythmic lines like a funk priestess in full command. A drifting guitar solo gives way to ghostly “Ooo” harmonies that float above like signals from another world.
Mothership Radio’s fearless first statement, Gravity Is Situational is chaotic, clever, and above all, alive. Check it out on Spotify.
