Milwaukee’s indie rock duo, The Pulltops, are throwing a sonic curveball with their latest cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s iconic “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” Forget the classic rockin’ CCR version you know—this is something completely different.
The song opens with a single shimmering guitar line that hangs in the air, echoing like a lone raindrop before a storm. The vocals enter, slow and melancholic, a world away from John Fogerty’s signature growl. Ethereal backing vocals weave in and out, building an atmosphere that’s more haunting than hopeful. The harmonies come as a gentle croon and gradually soar alongside the melody.
The Pulltops build a soundscape that’s more like a slow burn. Echoing drums and subtle percussion create a sense of unease, perfectly capturing the lyrical themes of uncertainty and longing.
As “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” progresses, it takes on an anthemic quality. The drums rise in a steady crescendo, joined by the majestic uprising of instrumentals. The backing vocals start to sing the chorus along with the lead vocalist creating a cinematic soundscape that soars above the rest.
The Pulltops have taken a classic rock staple and transformed it into something altogether new. It’s more emotional, moodier, and infinitely more touching. It washes over you, leaving you changed in its wake.
If you’re looking for a fresh take on a familiar favorite, then The Pulltops’ “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” is a must-listen. They show us how reinterpretation of even the most well-worn songs can still surprise us.
