What sets out as a homesick song about a man wanting to return to his roots, Barry Muir in “Home in a New York Minute” turns the flow into wanting to return to his lover’s arms, for that is his home. The alternative rock song is intentionally country, with elements of folk scattered throughout its musical sensibility.
Starting with a groovy tune, slowly turning to a country rhythm with the acoustic guitar, “Home in a New York Minute,” the percussion and the drums boost the momentum, giving the song its rock spirit. All the while, Barry’s pitchy voice is already set in the country with the twang. Country music, as a whole, has a way of naturally blending nostalgia into its rhythm just by being present. And Barry Muir has represented that flair poignantly. As for the lyrics, they already convey a nostalgic tone associated with missing your home.
Barry tells us a story of leaving home for San Antonio and building a new life there, but by the time winter came, he missed the snow and left for Buffalo. That’s when the chorus breaks out with “I will be home/In a New York Minute/I realize what sets the skies have nothing there for me.”
Barry Muir recalls “every second” feeling sweet until he’s home. The feeling that Barry sings about gets much larger than life and is universally resonant with the realization of forgetting what we had when we left the most important thing in our lives. The distance teaches us exactly how significant and precious it was.
If not for the sake of music, listen to “Home in a New York Minute” to feel the tremendous warmth in Barry Muir’s voice and lyricism now!
