Violetera’s new album, How A Clock Becomes A Ruler, is an instrumental journey that showcases the best of the Portland-based trio’s post-hardcore intensity, post-rock atmospherics, and shoegaze textures. Released through Etxera Records, this album follows a decade of artistic evolution, delivering a soundscape as intricate as it is emotive.
Opening with “Wearing Thin,” Violetera immediately sets the tone for the album. Chiming guitars and pounding drums form a delicate yet forceful interplay, building to a climactic bridge that brims with raw emotion and balances tension and release.
As the album unfolds, the third track, “Distant Cousins,” offers a soothing and reflective tone. Relaxing guitar melodies create a comforting embrace, with softer, pattering drum beats rustling in the background. Gradually, the guitars grow more vibrant, and shimmering cymbals infuse the composition with a sparkling dynamism.
The fifth track, “First Blush,” injects energy with pulsating riffs and relentless drum rhythms. Shimmering chimes give way to gritty, fuzzy guitar tones, ramping up the intensity. It’s a sonic crescendo that captures the urgency and vibrancy that defines much of Violetera’s sound.
“New York Skeleton Blues” brings the album to a dreamy yet steady groove. Its lush guitar tones envelop the listener, creating a vibrant but subdued ambiance. This track’s mild steadiness provides a meditative close to the album’s dynamic journey.
