Hurt by Kate Ellis: Review
Kate Ellis has released a limited edition of hand-numbered vinyl of her second album ‘Spirals’ on March 3rd, 2023 and it features the single ‘Hurt’ as a stunning bonus track. The widely acclaimed album in vinyl form got released via River Rose Records with a surprising gift for listeners. Louisiana-born singer/songwriter Kate Ellis is known for her melancholic American/folk style singing and ‘Hurt’ is loaded with melancholy. She took more of a Johnny Cash approach in covering the iconic Nine Inch Nails song.
Kate Ellis’ ‘Hurt’ is a stunning melodic journey full of cinematic thrills. The imagery she paints with every note is a result of deeper soul-searching and fearlessness. Depicting human emotions through one’s voice is no ordinary act. Seldom we see someone’s singing match the emotion it conveys and Kate Ellis has mastered that art. The slide guitar to start sets up the listeners for a journey through contemplation and deeper dive into human struggles. The chorus is accompanied by piano and synth to bring the heat down as if letting go of all the reservations and accepting fate. But it is her voice and the way she sings that makes this song so intimate and soulful- a journey everyone must embark on.
Overall the musical arrangements allow her voice to take the lead, captivating the listeners and taking them deeper into her artistic palace.
