I Had Wanted to Hold by Naomi Pacifique: Review
Building up to her 2023 album ‘look, the wind is coming for us’, ‘I Had Wanted to Hold’ by Naomi Pacifique is an experimental lo-fi song inspired by the patterns and rhythms of water that explores the artist’s certain lived intimate experience.
The song is said to be influenced by contemporary artists such as Big Thief, Courtney Barnett, and Yo La Tengo, and the vocals and guitar work are written in a style reminiscent of these artists. Naomi Pacifique’s background in visual arts, poetry, and creative writing is evident in the poetic and evocative lyrics of the song. The reverberated guitar in combination with her nonchalantly seductive singing creates a dreamlike otherworldly atmosphere that draws the listener in and keeps them submerged in its dreamy haze. The song’s intimate theme is evident in its execution of the sounds and arrangement. It may be described best to those who are not familiar with the works of Naomi or the artists mentioned above as Dream Pop, but a lot more theatrical and indie at its core. The fact that the song was recorded in her bedroom adds an organic factor to the sound that is at the core of indie lo-fi productions and it is evident in the mix.
Overall, ‘I Had Wanted to Hold’ is a unique and interesting listen, with a compelling blend of influences and a personal, intimate focus. It’s a highly recommended listen for theatrical indie lo-fi lovers.
