Forget sunshine and rainbows. Russian band Fugu Quintet’s “Interweavement” is a dive into a world bathed in the cool glow of neon signs and cigarette smoke. This 2021 release is a genre-bending dark jazz masterpiece mixed with progressive rock.
The album kicks off with “Firefly,” a track that shimmers with glinting keys, setting the stage for a serene atmosphere. Then, the brass moans in—not with sadness, but with a world-weary cool. It’s a perfect piece of jazz that gets you reeling into the coming tracks.
Things get interesting with “Duck of War,” throwing a curveball so unexpected it’ll leave you grinning because the brass starts to remind you of ducks. It’s bizarre, it’s catchy, it’s undeniably danceable. The drums pound a relentless rhythm, urging you to move your feet as the “duck” sings its war cry. The album reminds us that even amidst potential cultural oblivion, there’s still room for some absurdity.
The journey culminates with “Krakatoa.” The contemplative brass sets the mood, building with jazzy layers and intense guitar riffs that eventually introduce soaring strings, creating an anthemic and cinematic soundscape. But just as the tension builds, the heavy layers dissipate, replaced by raw, organic percussive beats. The album ends on a melancholic note with a slow, chiming guitar amidst an immersive atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression.
Listen to “Interweavement” by Fugu Quintet and let the music inspire you to break free from the cycle of uninspired creation.
