Russia-born and LA-based singer-songwriter Natalia Questโs latest single, โInversion,โ hits like a timely thunderstorm in the current world. This commentary is your turbulent ticket to a 3:10 minute long ride that is thought-provoking as it is hauntingly beautiful.
Before we dive in, look at the music cover. The cover says it all. With George Orwellโs quote, โWAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH,โ from his famous book 1984, we already know what the song will be about: Inverting information through mass manipulation.
From the get-go of โInversion,โ the orchestral classical music sets a foreboding tone. It gradually builds into a crescendo of heavy, dark string arrangements. Questโs thick and rich voice joins the mix in a lower register. As gritty distorted guitars and thumping drums enter the scene, the song transforms into a powerhouse of sound that perfectly complements the weight of its message.
Questโs vocals soar, haunting and dreary, trailing behind like a ghostly echo. You can feel the unease in her delivery as she emphasizes the depth of the subject matter, particularly the theme of genocide. Itโs a stark reminder of our harsh realities today, a musical mirror reflecting the devastation around us.
Musically, Quest is reminiscent of Rammstein, Queen, Radiohead, and many more. Recorded in her home studio in California, the production is a collaborative effort, with Cody Doss handling mixing duties and Alex Bel taking charge of sound design.
Itโs worth noting that Questโs dedication to humanity and compassion goes beyond the studio. How she parted ways with her previous sound designer, who didnโt align with her artistic expression and concerns, speaks volumes about her integrity.
When many stay indifferent, Natalia Quest urges us to stay humane and engage with her latest single, โInversion.โ
