Late Blooming is the mesmerizing debut EP by Rose Rutledge, the Brooklyn-based artist behind the solo project Late Blooming. Known for her skills as a producer, singer-songwriter, and “rogue flutist,” Rutledge weaves elements of Lofi ambient and electro-pop in this introspective EP that celebrates the beauty of maturing at one’s own pace and embraces both the lost branches of unfulfilled potential and the buds of new growth.
Late Blooming opens with “Everytime I,” a song that blends soulful backing vocals and breathy atmospherics. A lightly tapping percussion and Rutledge’s husky, grounded vocals guide the track, while the flute floats gently above, creating a dreamy soundscape that reflects a dance of denial and nostalgia. Here, Rutledge calls out to memories as if they respond back, embodying the joy of suspended animation.
The short interlude “Prelude (My Dreams)” makes you feel like you are stranded in a Nordic landscape as the grave and throaty hums immerse you in the folds of nature. “My Dreams” follows the track with Rutledge’s high and eccentric voice singing wispily and hookily over ambient immersion and vibrant, dreamy pulsating percussion. Through this track, she finds hope amidst heartbreak, seeing through the delusions with candid self-reflection.
Another interlude, “Prelude (Feet in the Sea),” reflects on growth and acceptance. With theatrical, melancholic flute lines and suspenseful tones, Rutledge captures a sense of rooted nostalgia for her Seattle hometown. “Feet in the Sea,” the closing track, brings everything full circle with a slow, sonorous vocal performance backed by airy flutes and ghostly harmonies. The track crescendos with rhythmic clapping and organic percussion, evoking the mystical feel of a woodland faerie dance.
Late Blooming journeys us through life and all its phases while connecting us to the beauty in life’s slow blooms. Listen to this evocative meditation on finding beauty in growth on Spotify and let it lead you where it may.
